At one o’clock on a weekday night Manila’s Roxas Boulevard (of Baywallk, as I is better known) is buzzing with a variety of entertainment. A group of young stand-up comedians in lurid polyester overalls, sporting gelled Mohawk manes, tumble across a temporary stage shrieking Tagalog lines that send the crowds into hysterical fits of laughter. A little further down a band called Harmony belts out mushy hip-hop to people sitting at a caf?. Vendors selling corn on the cob, cigarettes, guitars and ballot-a duck’s egg boiled once the chick inside has reached a certain stage of development (often having grown feathers too), a very popular and very grisly local delicacy- weave in and out of the crowds. On another makeshift stage, a group of young rappers keeps the audience dancing. A warm breeze sweeps in from Manila Bay, shaking the coconut trees, sending the decorative neon globes that line the boulevard into spasms, and distorting the faint light of ships anchored in the bay. A steady stream of traffic flows by.
The first thing that strikes you about Manila is not the beautiful bay, the smoggy traffic, the fantastic sunsets of the many different types of food-it’s the music. It’s everywhere. At the airport a 11-piece Pinikpikan band plays a harmonious (sometimes frantic) fusion of local folk music and modern jam-band rock, using bamboo reed pipes, flutes, xylophones and percussion instruments, singing in English and local dialects.
If there’s one thing Manila is not, it’s a walker’s city. Metro Manila is 17 different cities (Or administrative areas) rolled into one large National Capital Region (NCR), of which Manila city is one. Apart from a few areas in Intramurous (the old Spanish city) and parts of Malate and Ermita (the area around Baywalk,) the others are either too chaotic or too crowded to enjoy walking through.
GETTING AROUND IN MANILA Moving around in Manila is fairly cheap- taxis are the most comfortable and usually will not cost more than P250. Jeepneys are a much more fun way to see the city and talk to Manilineans but they can get hot and dusty
OUTSIDE MANILA Buses are the easiest ways to travel around Luzon,
But the bus system is fairly disorganized and there is no central station-it’s best to ask at your hotel. If you’re planning to travel to other islands you’ll have to take a boat. If you’re adventurous you can try novelties like Balut or Tenga (pig’s ears).

The sea is never too far away in Mauritius. The moment you step out of the airport, you smell the sea. And as you turn onto the M2, which is Mauritius’ only motorway that runs from the airport in the south to the capital, Port Louis, in the north, the rear view mirror captured the sea in its intense blue colour.
Everyone seemed to be in relaxed mode in Mauritius, and you drive in the slow lane, taking your time to soak in the languid air. The next morning, you would be in the sea- rather, below the surface- making eye contact with schools of colourful fish. The diving spots are just 10 to 15 minutes by boat from the beach, and it takes you less than two hours to get back to the shore after the underwater action.
On your third day in Mauritius, head south from Flic en Flac and drive through the Black River Gorges National Park. Next up is Chamarel, a village famous for its coloured earths. Experts attribute this wonder to the unequal cooling of volcanic rock.
Next head to the Grand Bassin. Also known as the Ganga Talao, this is a pilgrimage for the island’s large Hindu population. A myth says that a few drops of the Ganga, which fell from Lord Shiva’s dreadlocks, led to the the creation of this gigantic lake. This explains why a giant statue of the Hindu god dominates the entrance to the Talao.
Make your way back to Flick en Flac via the road that runs along the south coast. This is one road that every visitor must do- especially the stretch from Souillac to Baie du Cap. At places the road comes to close to the sea that you could park your car, take three steps and be on the beach. Take another five steps and you will be standing knee deep in the India Ocean. You just cannot escape this when you come here.
Though Mauritius’ claim to fame are its beaches, I would recommend that you hire a car and spend a day at the wheel, exploring towns and places. Take the opportunity to check out a few hotels.

But there’s a secret to getting the best out of a trip to Ooty and its is this: go off-season (March to May). Go discover an Ooty that veils herself in season.
This Ooty is a series of piquant montages: the sun lighting up one hill even as the other beside it remains shrouded in green velvet; ponies contentedly chomping grass by the kerbside; the sharp fragrance of pines lining a mist-laden road; the aroma of hot filter coffee and sambar.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Ooty has plenty of attractions, both on and off the beaten path. The Botanical Gardens are well laid-out with avenues of shady trees and myriad ornamental plants and flowers. But the main attraction here is the fossilised tree trunk – all of 20 million years old. The garden includes different types of roses, imported shrubs, rare flowering plants and an Italian and Japanese garden. A Summer Festival is held here each year in May, with a grand Flower Show taking centre-stage.
The Rose Garden, atop a hill of Etiennes Road, is all of 10 acres. In winter, when the 1,919 varieties of roses of all hues are out, a stroll in this scented garden is an unforgettable experience.
Ooty Lake
John Sullivan, the first Collector and virtual founder of Ooty, constructed this 2 ? -km long artificial lake in 1824. There is a charming lake garden a jetty, snack bars, and pony and toy-train rides on offer for the kiddies.
For all that, 12 lakh tourists visit the lake every year. Boating is on offer here every day from 8am to 6 pm.
Best all year around. Ooty is never really out of season, though March to May is considered rime time here.
Adventure
Climb up the highest peak in the Blue Mountains at 8,606 ft – Dodda Betta, or Big Mountain – which commands the juncture of the Western and Eastern Ghats, offering unmatched vistas of the Nilgiri.
The Tourism Department arranges hang-gliding courses from March to May every year, plus the streams and lakes of the Nilgiris are an angler’s delight, stocked with trout, carp and trench.
Picnic spots
Ooty’s most popular picnic spot, is a vast expanse (20,000 acres) of undulating landscape, which used to be the ground for the Ooty Hunt. The Ninth Mile and Sandy Nallah, a popular spot for film shoots,Cairn Hill is situated about 3 km on the road to Avalanche and really is one of the last original walks.
The Kalhatti Falls, en route to Mysore, drops a good 131 ft down when in spate and is a hit with picnickers.
Shopping
Ooty is also famous for its tea, handmade chocolates, aromatic oils and spices. Handmade chocolates in every flavour you can imagine can be found in every other shop.
Pykara Lake (25 km)
Pykara’s dense shoals, Toda settlements, shallow downs and lake make it a lovely getaway. Apart from its lush surrounds, Pykara has a boathouse and restaurant.

Hold the sides of the mouse with your thumb on one side and ring finger or pinkie, which ever feels more comfortable to you, on the other side. Your index finger goes on the left button and your middle finger on the right button. (Some computer mice only have one button, some have several, and some have a wheel which you can use your middle finger to depress the wheel then turn it up or down to scroll pages very quickly or slow depending on how quickly you turn the wheel. Personally I love the wheel and would not have a mouse without it!) When you are told to 'click' use the button under your index finger, or the left button.
